What to Wear for Newborn Family Photos: A Guide for Parents and Siblings

Welcoming a newborn into your family is one of life’s most beautiful moments—bursting with love, wonder, and the sweetest kind of chaos. Capturing these early days through photography isn’t just about the baby; it’s about documenting the unique bond that makes your family yours.

And believe it or not, what you wear really does make a difference. It’s not about being fancy—it’s about choosing outfits that feel like you, while also helping create warm, timeless images you’ll treasure forever.

As a newborn photographer based in Scotland, I’m often asked what families should wear for their baby’s first photo session. So here’s my go-to guide for parents and siblings to help you feel comfy, relaxed, and totally photo-ready.

Choosing a Colour Palette

A soft, neutral colour palette is your best friend when it comes to newborn family photos. Think whites, creams, gentle greys, and pastels. These tones naturally draw focus to the emotions and connections in the frame, rather than the clothes themselves.

Start with one or two base colours that suit your skin tone and the setting, then layer in subtle variations – maybe a blush pink here or a soft sage green there. The aim is to create harmony without being too matchy-matchy.

A wee bit of texture (like knits or flowing linen) can add depth to your images without stealing the show. If you fancy a pattern, keep it delicate – nothing too bold or busy.

Let the palette set the tone. When everyone’s outfits blend gently together, it allows the real stars of the show – your family’s love and connection – to shine through.

Dressing the Parents

Let’s be honest – comfort is key, especially in those early newborn days! But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style.

For mums, a flowing dress in soft, breathable fabric feels lovely to wear and photographs beautifully. Dads look great in a simple, well-fitted shirt and chinos or smart jeans. Keep things relaxed, natural, and easy to move in.

Don’t be afraid of texture – lace, knits, or layers can add visual interest without feeling overdone. Just steer clear of anything too bold or bright that might distract from the gentle, emotional tone of the session.

As for shoes, go simple. Ballet flats, sandals, or even barefoot if we’re in the studio or at home can look gorgeous and authentic.

And if you’ve got a favourite piece of jewellery or a meaningful accessory? Bring it along. A personal touch is always welcome – just keep it subtle so the focus stays on the moments you’re sharing.

Outfit Ideas for Siblings

When siblings are part of the session (which I love!), let’s keep things playful yet coordinated.

Pick colours that sit nicely with the overall palette, and let them wear something they feel comfy in. It doesn’t need to be formal – just something soft, simple, and age-appropriate.

For little girls, soft dresses with sweet details like lace or ruffles are always a hit. For boys, you can’t go wrong with a soft shirt and chinos or shorts, depending on the season.

Textures like cotton, knitwear, and linen help bring that natural, relaxed look to life. Keep accessories minimal and avoid anything that might scratch, itch, or distract them (or you!).

And if they’ve got a wee toy or blanket they love, bring it along – it can add personality and comfort to the session.

Accessorising Wisely

When it comes to accessories, the golden rule is: less is more.

A simple necklace or pair of delicate earrings can elevate a look without drawing attention away from what matters most. Dads might choose a clean watch or bracelet in neutral tones.

For siblings, a dainty headband or soft hat can be adorable – as long as it’s comfy and fits the style of the shoot.

Stick with natural materials like fabric, wood, or leather when possible. Avoid anything overly shiny or sparkly, as it can catch the light in a way that’s less than flattering in photos.

Above all, your accessories should add to the feeling of ease and authenticity – not distract from it.

Preparing for the Photoshoot

A bit of prep goes a long way in helping you feel calm and confident on the day.

Make sure all outfits are clean, ironed, and ready to go the night before – no last-minute panics, thank you very much!

Touch base with your photographer (me!) ahead of time to run through any ideas or questions you have. I’ll help guide you so that everything runs smoothly on the day.

The morning of the shoot, aim for a relaxed vibe. Keep everyone well-fed and rested, and allow yourselves a bit of breathing space to get ready.

And finally – take a breath and soak it all in. This photoshoot is about capturing your real connection as a family. Let go of perfection, and just be yourselves. That’s where the magic lives.
